The north-eastern region of Lorraine wasn't always part of France and once belonged to the Middle Empire until it was bequeathed to Charlemagne's grandson, Lothair, gaining it the name Lotharingia. Today it is the only French region to border three countries, namely Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany. The holiday homes, holiday rentals and holiday apartments in the region reflect this history, with several Germanic names including that of its capital city, Metz.
History and culture
A unique blend of German and French culture persists throughout Lorraine's main cities. Once part of the Carolingian dynasty, Metz has many holiday apartments to choose from and is one of the oldest cities in France. The Gothic St. Etienne Cathedral, the Musée de la Cour d'or and the neo-Romanesque railway station are amongst the city's attractions, as is the contemporary art venue the Centre Pompidou Metz. The relatively newer city of Nancy is the site of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Place Stanislaus, an 18th century square. Amongst the other popular regional attractions are the mining museum in Petite Rosselle, the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, the largest American military cemetery in Europe, the 13th century Malbrouk Castle and Domremy la Pucelle, the birthplace of Joan of Arc.
Gastronomy and nature at its best
World famous mineral water originates from Lorraine's Vosges mountains and France's most famous thermal spas such as Bains-les-Bains, Vittel and Club Mediterranea are to be found amidst the region's lush fields, meadows and wildlife. Families with children and those who enjoy winter sports should rent a holiday house or holiday rental in the ski areas of La Brasse Hohneck or in the mountain resort of Gérardmer. Clear lakes, fishing ponds and watersports such as sailing are popular, as is cruising through the Marne-Rhine Canal and its many locks.
